Logan’s workboxes - 5/1 - Fingerprints and Food Chains

Box #1 - Bambi by Felix Salten - these chapters are long and involved.  It required quite a bit of talking after the chapter is done as deer dying and the rut is starting.

Box #2 - Nature Study - today we discovered the tree that went along with this cone that was in the street on our walk.  We also played a nature Food Chain game again.

_MG_7303_MG_7313

The game is above Logan’s head so we just make up cycles of life with the cards and try to see if they work.  This was the working one that we came up with today:

Box #3 - 1 - 10 dot to dot.  He was searching as he drew so his lines went all over the place before they ‘found’ the right number.  I added in the ruler so he can make his lines a bit more straight by finding the number he needs to go to BEFORE he puts the pen down.

Box #4 - Bob Book - Completed #5 today.  Smile

_MG_7304

Box #5 - a worksheet on opposites.  Once he knew the concept, he did this easily… but it took some explaining and help with the longer words (although he sounded out “young” which was kinda awesome.)

_MG_7306

Box #6 Ed Emberley and a notepad to make fun fingerprint critters on.

_MG_7305_MG_7314

Box #7 - A small motor skills activity of lacing a tree sewing card with a needle.  Both the needle and a button were tied on so that he wouldn’t lose the end of the thread.  This made it much less frustrating!

_MG_7307

Box #8 - Another pattern block with no colors.  This one was easier because the shapes were more defined than the last one, but it still took him a while with no color guide.

Box #9 - A page out of Kumon’s First Rhymes book.

_MG_7308

Box #10 - some fun with Wedgits!

Workboxes 4/24

Box #1 - Getting to the last part of Bambi by Felix Salton

_MG_7250

Box #2 - Nature Study!  Today we studied squirrels and fern fronds.

_MG_7251

We read about Feisty the Squirrel in our Ecojournals and the illistration on the side made Logan ask questions.

_MG_7242

It was such a PERFECT time to ask about fern fronds that I made him put his rainboots back on come out and look at our ferns.  The fronds are different…  They do not curl quite as much as the ones in the book, but they were still really fun to look at!

_MG_7271

Cyan found a safe spot from the rain under the eves and drew a beautiful picture of our broken cherry tree that is currently blooming.

_MG_7247

Box #3: Into the Forest game of food chains!  Both kids thought this was fun.  Smile

_MG_7252

Box #4 - Bob Book #4 and he passed it with flying colors!

_MG_7253

Box #5 - Spindle Boxes to work on numbers.

_MG_7254

These are self correcting so it was cool to see him figure out what he was supposed to do and correct himself.

_MG_7259

Box #6 - Writing his name with the proper spaces and case.  This still needs some work, but he’s got his whole name down really well (readable to anyone) so I am not pushing hard… just working slowly.

_MG_7255

Box #7 - 1 - 10 Dot to Dot.  I added a ruler so he could make better straight lines.

_MG_7256

Box #8 - Kumon book page from First Rhyming Words

_MG_7257

Box #9 - pattern blocks.  It’s the first one I have added that has no color coding to it.  He did GREAT although he used pieces I wouldn’t have, which actually thrilled me because he figured it out all on his own.

_MG_7258

Box #10 - This one has no picture and I am not sure why, but it was a movie on Geography and Maps from the library.  It had a lot of new vocabulary so we will be visiting it again before I expect him to apply any of the information, but it’s good to get those mental boxes started with good info early.  Smile

Spring Football

Ridgewater just completed its first week of 2 weeks of Spring Football. Hard to believe Tabor only has 2weeks of school left before summer break. Tabor will be moving back home to work at the Mill for the summer.

Dance Festival

Shay and Derek had the VERY cool  (well actually it was 100 degrees today) opportunity to be in a 4 stake dance festival.  This year is Arizona's 100th birthday and we celebrated in style by showcasing different dances thru the years.  Because Shay and Derek are in the 14-15 age group together, for a few more weeks, they decided to pair up.  Made it easy to get pictures of them:)  They represented the 1970s era by dancing to Safety Dance.  It was AWESOME to see that many youth come together for a common purpose.

The best looking dance couple around!!!
These 2 youtube links should show the Mia-maid/teacher dance along with the finale number.  Take a look.

Here are a few pics of a couple of the other numbers.  The twins are hoping they get the chance to participate in one of these when they are youth.

Workboxes 4/17 - Mouse Feet and Fir Trees

Box #1 - A chapter from Bambi by Felix Salten.

_MG_7227

Box #2 - Nature Study.

_MG_7228

Today was a focus on the trees we had in our yard. We took out Fun with Nature book out and discovered that in our yard we have a Maple (which is JUST starting to leaf), 4 HUGE Douglas Fir trees, and a Cherry.

_MG_7226

We also discovered that the woodchips we just got to put under the apple tree area is from a Cedar tree. We could tell because there were a few small branches we could identify in the Fun with Nature book.

2012-04-17

Logan decided to focus his picture on the Doug Fir. We talked about the specifics of the tree and I read him this little story and had him narrate it back to me for his nature notebook.

The Legend of the Douglas Fir

Box #3 - Focus Study (Praying Mantis)- Hermie and the Mantis Who Wouldn’t Pray. (He is still 5 afterall. lol! He loved it.)

_MG_7229_MG_7240

Box #4 - A page from his Kumon book with short vowel sounds.

_MG_7235

Box #5 - Handwriting practice cards with a dry erase marker.

_MG_7234

Box #6 - Secret Writer packet.  I wrote him a note in disappearing ink and he had to uncover and read it to me.  He LOVED this.  We will be doing it again.  Smile

_MG_7230

Box #7 - Pattern Blocks with no colors this time.  A bit more complicated to look for just the shape instead of color matching.

_MG_7236

Box #8 - Boggle Jr again.

_MG_7231_MG_7241

Box #9 - Bob Book #4

_MG_7232

Box #10 - 1 - 10 dot to dot with dice in the box to practice his addition from yesterday again with me.

_MG_7233

And that’s it for today!  Smile
